Services
I offer expert translations from English into German in the following areas:
- Literature, literary criticism, history and cultural studies
- Art and architecture
- Film and performing arts—from scripts and treatments to marketing copy
- Creative technologies and video games, including in-game and out-of-game content
- Publishing, advertising, social media posts, and SEO content
Please understand that I cannot assist you with legal and highly technical translations such as contracts and instruction manuals.
The prices listed here are only meant to provide a general overview. Every project is unique, and it is not uncommon to negotiate a flat fee for a specific service. Feel free to request a quote using the contact form.
While initial estimates are necessarily based on the source text, the number of lines in the target text (finished translation) is used to calculate the final price. A standard line is defined as 50-55 characters, including spaces.
Translations
Regular & Editable
This is the base rate for most translation projects. Submitting the source text in an editable file format (DOCX, TXT, HTML, Pages, etc.) means that I can get to work right away.
€1.80 per standard line
Regular & Non-Editable
Non-editable files (PDFs, photos, scans, etc.) have to be converted into an editable format before they can be translated. This additional step results in a higher price.
€2.00 per standard line
Complex & Editable
Source texts with a complex argument structure or an exceptional amount of technical terminology often require additional time. The higher line price ensures that difficult projects don’t have to be rushed.
€2.00 per standard line
Complex & Non-Editable
Challenging texts in a challenging format demand extra care and attention. This line price applies only to complex source texts that are submitted in a non-editable format.
€2.20 per standard line
Other Services
Multimedia Sources
Multimedia or audiovisual sources include audio and video recordings of speeches, meetings, performances, interviews, and telephone conversations. I am happy to provide subtitles and transcripts based on different multimedia sources, but please understand that I am not a professional voice actor and cannot offer voice-over recordings or dubbing services. Because audiovisual translation and localization tasks are uniquely complex and often unpredictable, they are typically billed by the hour. To learn more about the difference between translation and localization, feel free to check out my FAQ page.
Editing, Copyediting, Proofreading
I am happy to proofread or edit existing work from other translators as well as original works in German. Because the amount of time and labor can vary drastically, price calculations based on the number of words or lines are often very difficult. For that reason, all editing services are billed by the hour. Click here to find out more about the differences between editing, copyediting, and proofreading.
Turnkey Rate
Please note that I have to charge a minimum of €20 per order. This so-called turnkey rate is roughly equivalent to 10 standard lines and will be charged even if the total order value is lower.
Rush Fees & Surcharges
For very short deadlines and projects that have to be completed on weekends, a rush fee may be added to the total.
Translations that require extensive technical work, such as recreating the complex layout of the source text or working with extensive formatting guidelines, will be subject to a higher base rate than plain text translations.
Similarly, exceptionally creative localization or transcreation tasks that involve extensive research and require significantly more time than a regular translation may be subject to a surcharge.
